Are you stuck in a cycle of trying diet after diet only to find that you can’t stick to any of them? Does this lead to feeling bad about yourself or feeling that you will never be happy in your body?

Or maybe you find that you avoid keeping certain foods in your house because you know you can’t stop yourself from eating them all. You don’t have control over eating and are unable to stop despite feeling full.

If this sounds like you, it’s not your fault.

Food restriction and imposing strict rules around food can result in unrealistic expectations that inevitably lead to disappointment, negative self-talk, and perhaps even binge eating. Breaking this cycle can be hard and goes beyond just changing your eating habits. It also requires you to gain control of your thoughts, behaviors, and feelings.

At Green Heart Therapy, we offer a safe, supportive environment to help you break the cycle, restore a regular eating schedule, and make peace with food.

10 Common Experiences Shared in the Journey Through Binge Eating

These common sentiments are shared by people who have walked this path before you. We share these not to define your experience, but to reassure you that there is empathy, compassion, and, most importantly, hope for change.”

We understand. It’s not just a matter of willpower. You might feel like you’re caught in a cycle of fear and fixation. Binge eating is often fueled by some type of restriction, whether physiological or psychological. Identifying and removing these barriers can sometimes be powerful enough to stop the the cycle of binge eating, and that is what we will work on in therapy.

The overwhelming urge to keep eating, even when you’re physically uncomfortable or in pain, is a key struggle in binge eating disorder. It’s not just about the food—it’s a coping mechanism. Our goal in therapy is to help you find healthier ways to cope and break this distressing cycle.

Body dissatisfaction is a common sentiment among those with binge eating disorder, and it can fuel the cycle of binging and guilt. We understand that societal pressures and personal beliefs about your body can be challenging to navigate, and work to help you cultivate self compassion.
Binge eating is a complex disorder that is frequently rooted in emotional distress, not a lack of self-control or willpower, and by addressing the underlying emotional triggers and adjusting unhelpful thought patterns, we aim to help you feel in control instead of feeling controlled by your eating.
The secrecy surrounding your eating habits can heighten feelings of guilt and shame, making you feel more isolated. We get it. You’re not alone, and it’s courageous to seek help. Therapy offers a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be open about your struggles.
The cycle of binge eating and subsequent guilt and shame can be extremely distressing. We understand that these feelings aren’t just about food, but about how you perceive yourself and your actions. In therapy, we work to manage these feelings and help you build a kinder relationship with yourself.
The constant worry associated with binge eating can consume your thoughts and lead to significant stress. We understand that binge eating often stems from deeper issues, such as body dissatisfaction, fear of judgement, or external life stressors. In therapy, we will help you identify what is driving YOUR eating disorder and work towards a healthier relationship with both food and your body.

Questions About Binge Eating Treatment

Absolutely, therapy has been shown to be highly effective for binge eating disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is especially successful, focusing on identifying and changing dysfunctional thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors. However, everyone’s journey is unique, so we tailor our therapeutic approach to your specific needs and circumstances.
The timeline for improvement varies from person to person, depending on the severity of the binge eating disorder and your personal circumstances. Some people may see progress within a few sessions, while others may require a longer period of therapy. Recovery is a journey, not a race, and we are here to walk it with you.

Our goal is not to impose a strict diet, but rather to help you develop a healthier relationship with food. We want to give you the tools you need to make balanced, mindful decisions that are good for your physical and emotional health. We work from an intuitive eating perspective helping you get in touch with your body so you become aware of your internal hunger cues. Rather than focusing on what to eat and how much to eat based on external influences, we tune into trusting your body (intuition).

Your privacy is of utmost importance to us. All discussions during therapy sessions are kept strictly between you and your therapist.
Relapse is not a sign of failure; it’s part of the recovery journey. If it happens, we’ll work together to understand what led to the relapse and develop strategies to avoid future triggers. Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection.

Absolutely. We work to provide you with strategies to cope with negative emotions. By working through the underlying reasons you have an unbalanced relationship with food, we aim to alleviate feelings of guilt and shame, boosting your self-esteem and body image in the process.

At Green Heart Therapy, we often use Family-Based Treatment (FBT), particularly when working with children and teens who have an eating disorder. FBT is an evidenced based treatment that is proven to be extremely effective at rapidly reversing malnutrition and eating disorder behaviors. FBT does not focus on finding the root cause of an eating disorder. Instead, FBT believes that parents can be their child’s most powerful advocates and best shot at full recovery and we utilize the family unit to help support the child in their recovery journey. Throughout therapy, the therapist will guide the parents/guardians on how to best support their child at mealtimes and beyond, with the hopes of rapidly restoring their child to a complete and full recovery.

What you can expect from binge eating treatment?

While we can’t guarantee specific results or a direct timeline, we can tell you that with consistency and commitment, we are confident that you may start to see improvements such as:
  • Greater control over eating habits and a decreased frequency of binge eating episodes.
  • Improved coping mechanisms for stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions.
  • Enhanced self-esteem and body image.
  • Less obsession over food and weight.
  • Development of a healthier, more balanced relationship with food.
